School Zone Guidance

The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme was developed in partnership by the NTA and Green-Schools, An Taisce, in 2020, as a response to the need to support schools to increase walking and cycling to school.
BSM assisted the NTA by reviewing a number of representative primary school frontages and considered strategies and details that could be introduced to remove car parking in the vicinity of schools and to introduce visual elements to clearly signal the presence of young children.
Ideas were initially trialed at schools within several local authorities and the Guidelines further documented and illustrated for broader national guidance and uptake.
The project has had significant uptake throughout the country with the now familiar range of 'pencil bollards', coloured road marking and kerb build-outs to reduce carriageway widths.
